Methodology
Source, window and updatesFlight-status data from FlightAware for departures from Spanish airports (mainland, Balearic and Canary Islands). Window: since 18 October 2026, the first day of data this year; the month and today figures are subsets. Flights are re-checked through the day; last update 25 October at 22:11 (Madrid time). Figures only grow as more departures are scanned: earlier, higher or lower totals on other pages or in older articles came from a different scope or data set.
How we countEvery departure from a Spanish airport, from the public flight-status feed. A flight qualifies if it landed 3+ hours after schedule or was cancelled within 14 days of departure. We multiply passengers on board (seat count × an 85% load-factor assumption) by the EU261 amount for the great-circle distance.
What we don’t knowWhether the airline has a valid extraordinary-circumstances defence. Weather, ATC strikes and security events reduce the real figure. That’s why this is an estimate of what passengers could claim, not what airlines will pay.
